Paediatric speech therapy session in Mitcham Adelaide

Speech therapy in Adelaide for children 2–18 years

Are you looking for practical help with speech sounds, language, literacy, social awareness or stuttering, or a plan that fits your neuro-diverse child and family routines? Our speech pathologists support children and teens aged 2 to 18, drawing on multiple evidence-informed approaches tailored to each individual’s goals, age and attention. For preschoolers and early primary school children with stuttering, we use the Lidcombe Program when suitable.

Sessions run weekly or fortnightly for 45 or 60 minutes (Lidcombe is 45 minutes).  We keep a set day and time for each family. There is no online booking for speech because the slots are fixed. Parents can be in the room or step out; you will always receive a debrief and simple home ideas to try. Speech therapy is delivered in our Mitcham practice by Lisa Mathers, CPSP (Lidcombe trained, co-owner), Lucy Leane, CPSP and Megan Talia, CPSP.

0

What does a speech pathologist help with?

We support children and teens (aged 2 – 18 years) with speech sounds, receptive and expressive language development, literacy foundations, early stuttering, social communication and autism-related goals. We also provide advice and practical tools for supporting your child at home.

How does a speech pathologist help with speech sound difficulties?

We assess which sounds are tricky and decide on the best approach to target these. We use our experience to plan and achieve goals providing tailored home practice.

What is the Lidcombe Program and who is it for?

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence-based, parent-delivered treatment for early stuttering. A Lidcombe-trained speech pathologist coaches you in short, daily speaking activities at home and how to track severity. Clinic sessions are weekly 45-minute sessions with regular reviews and a gradual step-down when goals are met.

It is designed for preschool and early primary-aged children who stutter.  If you have older children who stutter, we can discuss suitable alternatives.

Read more about the Lidcombe Program

How do you support language development?

Therapy targets the development of sentences and teaching of new concepts, vocabulary development and the teaching of grammar.

Do you treat stuttering?

For preschool and early primary school children we use a parent therapy approach (Lidcombe), with clear targets, weekly feedback and practical ways to practise between sessions.

Can you help with reading and spelling?

Yes. We work on letter–sound knowledge, decoding, spelling rules and reading comprehension, connecting what we practice in the clinic with real-life reading and spelling tasks at home and at school.

What about social communication and autism?

Working with you and your child, we set practical goals for developing social awareness in a neurodiverse affirming way. If appropriate, we can also support with AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) and provide guidance for families and schools.
